What Is An Egg Shaped Deck?
As you might be able to guess from the name, an Egg shaped deck is basically just a skateboard deck that’s shaped like an egg. More specifically, Egg shaped boards are typically characterised by their elliptical shape, with the widest point being around the centre, and pointed nose and tail for that premium flick. Due to being widest around the centre, Egg shaped decks are typically measured at this point so they can often feel narrower than described as well as needing narrower trucks than popsicles of the same width which is worth considering when buying.
As always, if you have any questions about a specific deck or need any help choosing, feel free to drop us an email or DM and we’ll do our best to answer your questions, or come see us in the shop to cop a feel in person.
History of Egg Shaped Decks
While Egg shaped decks might seem like a modern trend, the shape’s origins actually date all the way back to the 90s when the Egg or Football shape was first introduced. As street skating pioneers like Mark Gonzalez and Natas began churning out increasingly technical tricks, board shapes were forced to adapt with the OG fish-tailed pool shapes being replaced by thinner decks with rounded tails and longer noses, resulting in the birth of the Egg shaped deck.
Modern Ren-Egg-Sance
More recently, the modern egg renaissance was led by Heroin Skateboards who released the first Heroin Egg deck back in 2016 after rider, Daniel Shimizu, asked for a football shaped deck based on an old Mike Carroll shape. Since then, Heroin Egg boards have become some of their best-selling products with countless variations, from 7.9” Lil Eggs to 14” Eggzillas and everything in between. They even recently re-released the original Shimizu Egg to pay tribute to the shape's origins so that you can see where it all started.
Following Heroin’s lead, countless other brands have jumped on the Egg hype with the likes of Polar, Quasi, Death, Frog, Jacuzzi Unlimited, Sour Solution and even Primitive releasing their own version of the Egg or Football shape with countless pros opting to skate this iconic shape and proving that they perform just as well as any popsicle.
Why Skate An Egg Shaped Deck?
While shaped decks in general have come back into style over the last decade or so, Egg shaped decks in particular have seen a massive increase in popularity in recent years. So, what’s the crack with these Egg shaped skateboards? Well, there are countless reasons why people enjoy skating Egg shaped boards, whether it’s down to personal nostalgia for the good old days or fancying a change from standard popsicle decks.
Given their roots as one of the first real street shapes, Egg shaped decks offer a fun alternative to popsicle shapes while still providing the same level of performance, with some people even preferring the Egg shape for flip tricks due to the more rounded nose and tail. Likewise, given that Eggs are widest around the centre, they can also offer a larger surface area to land on while still being easy to flip.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference but there's no doubt that Egg shaped decks are a fun alternative to traditional shapes without compromising when it comes to performance, and with so many people skating them there must be a reason for the hype!
So, can we offer you a nice Egg in this trying time?
