About
One of the most common questions we get asked (apart from “Do you sell scooters?”) is, “Can we join the club?”.
Unfortunately, the simple answer is: no. We’re not really a club in the usual sense of the word, but we like to think we’re a little bit more than your average high-street shop. You don’t have to pay for membership and we don’t have a secret handshake or anything like that but you’re more than welcome to come chill in the shop, flick through some mags, watch some videos and discuss all things skateboarding. We ain’t gonna kick you out just because you’re not buying anything.
CSC as we know it today originally started out as a blog (anyone else remember those?) in the mid-2000s where the skaters of Cardiff and South Wales came together to discuss the latest gossip and engage in hilarious proto-shitposting in lengthy, anonymous comment threads (those were the days…). Sadly, this golden age was never meant to last and the name CSC faded into obscurity… that was until Bristol Mike brought it back from the dead by starting an Instagram account. Hijacking Mike’s initiative, we swiftly commandeered the Instagram account and used it to organise (in the loosest possible sense) a load of fun and chaotic skateboard events to bring the scene together, like our legendary Bute Square Go Skate Day event.
Our story is not without tragedy though. After 30 years of serving the skaters (and surfers and snowboarders) of Cardiff, the OG skater-owned shop City Surf tragically closed its doors in 2016. Big shoutout to Evo, Guto and the rest of the City Surf crew for all the hard work they put in to support the scene for all those years! But we couldn’t just abandon the skaters of Cardiff and leave them without a real skate shop now could we?! So, in 2016, CSC rose from the ashes of City Surf like a phoenix to carry on City Surf’s legacy as Cardiff’s only skater-owned shop.
At first, we found a loving home in Castle Emporium (RIP) alongside a load of other independent businesses - like our good mates at Hard Lines Coffee! However, after several years it was eventually time to fly the nest and in 2021 (after an absolute nightmare getting the space sorted) we moved into our new and improved, state-of-the-art CSC Clubhouse upstairs in 13 Church Street. You can now find us above renowned restaurant/cafe/bar, Bacareto, which just happens to be run by our good mates from Cardiff’s beloved indoor skatepark, Spit and Sawdust!
While CSC has changed a lot over the years, some things will always stay the same and we’re still all about the same things: nerding out about skating, supporting local brands and businesses, putting on a load of fun events and trying to help grow the Cardiff and South Wales skate scene. Whether we’re hooking up local skaters, running ads in magazines, filming videos or putting on chaotic events; we like to think we do our bit to give back to the community as much as possible, which is what being a skater-owned shop is all about.
