Working in collaboration with legendary photographer, Clay Patrick McBride, who's bold portraiture has led to him working with all kinds of famous faces, including LeBron James, Allen Iverson and Courtney Love, with his work featuring in countless publications, from Rolling Stone to Sports Illustrated. While his portfolio may span a wide range of genres and industries, 'Triumph: Icons of Rap' focuses in on his work photographing rap artists, showcasing some of the biggest names to ever hold a mic, including some that even your Mum could probably name.
Compiling almost two decades worth of history and spanning the entirety of the States, with artists from New York, California, Detroit, Louisiana, Houston and beyond, the book lives up to its name by offering a thorough encyclopaedia of the biggest legends in hip-hop. Inside the book, you'll find portraits of OGs like Lil Kim, Slick Rick, Jadakiss, DMX, Ghostface Killah, Nas, Jay-Z and GZA as well as some more modern faces like 50 Cent, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky and many, many more.
The images themselves range from Clay's sessions with artists during their early days all the way through to high-budget magazine campaigns and music video shoots from the heights of their careers, which of course means there's plenty of iconic shots. Add to this a selection of test polaroids, original contact sheets, never-before-seen collages and even hand-written thank you notes from the artists themselves, all plucked straight from Clay's personal scrapbook, and you're gonna struggle to find a more detailed and intimate look into the world of hip-hop than 'Triumph: Legends of Rap'.
