Originating from the same mind that produced the infamous Storm Flip, it's no surprise that Sci-Fi Fantasy are one of the most innovative skate brands of the modern generation. Known for their bizarre Instagram posts, one-of-a-kind team and unique imagery, Sci-Fi Fantasy walks that fine line between genius and insanity in true Jerry Hsu fashion, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Have a read below to find out more about your favourite skater's favourite skate brand, including Sci-Fi Fantasy's history, skate team, videos and more!
History of Sci-Fi Fantasy
Founded back in 2017, Sci-Fi Fantasy is the brainchild of professional skater, photographer and all-around legend, Jerry Hsu, after he parted ways with his former sponsor, Chocolate, in order to provide an outlet for his boundless creativity. As if skateboarding, photography and his other artistic endeavours weren't enough, Jerry somehow still has enough creative juices leftover to put out a consistent stream of top-quality, highly original Sci-Fi Fantasy designs.

Throwing conventional marketing to the wind, Sci-Fi Fantasy originally started out with an Instagram account that posted bizarrely cryptic images - including poorly drawn Star Wars characters, terrible 'Avatar' tattoos and conspiracy theory video thumbnails - often captured by Jerry himself, as well as occasional product teasers, which somehow created a massive amount of hype around the brand with people literally begging for restocks in the comments.

Keeping things exclusive with limited runs of caps, tees and hoods, Sci-Fi Fantasy's cult status continued to grow as more and more people cottoned on to the brand, with even celebs like Kim Kardashian seen wearing Sci-Fi Fantasy caps. Since then the brand has only continued to expand, producing their own decks alongside the clothing as well as finally selling to select skate shops to help you get a piece of the action.

Sci-Fi Fantasy Skate Team
Given the esoteric nature of Sci-Fi Fantasy, it makes sense that the team also embodies the brand's experimental mentality with an eclectic mix of legends calling the brand home. Despite the wide variety of styles, the Sci-Fi Fantasy team has a strong homie vibe which gives the brand a more wholesome feel than you might expect from the sometimes edgy aesthetics - but we've said it before and we'll say it again: Sci-Fi Fantasy is simply built different.

Further setting themselves apart from other brands, Sci-Fi Fantasy have also hooked up skateboard commentator and TikTok sensation, Gifted Hater, after Jerry noticed him supporting the brand and started following his private Instagram. Obviously Jerry Hsu is the only person who could make sponsoring a YouTuber cool but Joa actually fits in really well with the rest of the Sci-Fi Fantasy team so it's definitely a power move (although we don't recommend any other brands try this tactic).

Obviously they do sponsor more traditional skaters too with former Welcome pro and certified legend, Ryan Lay, becoming the brand's first pro, shortly followed by tech prodigy, Arin Lester, and former Foundation hunk, Corey Glick, to create a powerful trifecta of pros. The Sci-Fi Fantasy skate team currently features Jerry Hsu, Ryan Lay, Corey Glick, Arin Lester, Joa AKA Gifted Hater, Akwasi Owusu, Max Garson, Zak Anders and Gabriel Viking.

Sci-Fi Fantasy Skate Videos
Sadly, Sci-Fi Fantasy have been kinda lacking on the skate video front with no full-length offerings as of yet. But that doesn't mean they've been completely quiet though as they've treated us to a load of solo parts for some of their most beloved pros, including Ryan Lay, Arin Lester and Akwasi Owusu, who all show off their distinctive flavours, from Akwasi's mind-blowing wallies to Arin's next-level tech.
But while we eagerly await a Sci-Fi full-length (please Jerry, please!) you can witness the whole team in action on their recent Carolina tour courtesy of one of Gifted Hater's many online personalities: VlogMan4000. 'Carolina Fantasy' follows the Sci-Fi Fantasy squad as they make their way around the Carolinas with a load of tomfoolery, late-night shenanigans and general silliness alongside the skating.
Sci-Fi Fantasy Skateboards and Clothing
While they may not have released much in the way of videos, Sci-Fi Fantasy definitely haven't been slacking when it comes to their product. Taking inspiration from retro corporate aesthetics, obscure anime and other niche cultural references, Sci-Fi Fantasy have carved out their own unique visual identity with a strong selection of product that sets them apart from your average skate brand.

Best known for their iconic headwear, the signature Sci-Fi Fantasy Logo Caps and Beanies have long been some of their best-selling designs with their timeless, minimalist design that never goes out of style. But of course they don't always keep things simple with graphics also ranging from adorable Chibi characters, retro corporate logos, striped baseball caps, all-over crab prints and so much more.

While the headwear set the bar high, the clothing keeps up the standard with their signature Sci-Fi Fantasy Logo Hoods and Crews to match the Caps alongside a wide array of more esoteric T-shirt designs. Much like like the Caps, Sci-Fi Fantasy's clothing employs a wide array of imagery, ranging from corporate graphic design to niche anime and film references and everything in between, to help you add a splash of culture to your fits.

However, where Sci-Fi Fantasy really set themselves apart is through their selection of mind-blowing accessories which showcase their galaxy-brain thinking with a load of NBD designs. Ranging from fluorescent Sci-Fi Fantasy spatulas and toothbrushes to anime basketballs and car shaped sponges; if you thought their clothing was quirky, their range of accessories is on a whole other level! You might not have known you needed these but you do now.

Last but definitely not least, Jerry also took the next big step for the brand by elevating it from its humble clothing-oriented roots to a full-blown board brand, releasing their first run of decks back in 2020. As you can probably guess by now, Sci-Fi Fantasy decks feature a similarly esoteric array of imagery to match the clothing with Jerry consistently supplying a range of weird and wonderful pro graphics for Ryan Lay, Arin Lester, Corey Glick and himself alongside a load of equally stylish team graphics - all of which are manufactured by BBS using the finest maple for a premium feel.
