Hoping to settle an argument? Got a strict weight limit for a trip? Looking to shave off those few extra grams to gain those few extra millimetres on your ollies? People are always asking us 'what skateboard trucks are the lightest?' so we've done the heavy lifting to find out which skateboard trucks are actually the lightest - despite what the marketing might tell you - plus, more importantly, whether you should even care about how much your trucks weigh in the first place.
Obviously we've tried to keep thing as scientific as possible to make sure it's a fair test and all that, so we've only measured trucks that fit an 8.5" deck and abided by the strictest of rules to give as accurate results as possible. But that's enough of the boring stuff (if you can really say that weighing trucks isn't boring), have a read below to check out the results of our ultra-scientific experiment and find out, once and for all, what skateboard trucks are the lightest!

The Results
So, to answer the question, Thunder Hollow Lights are officially the lightest skateboard trucks we have available, coming in at a meagre 328 grams compared to Independent Stage 11 Trucks which are the heaviest at 401 grams. Overall, it's clear that Thunder are the best brand when it comes to weight alone, offering three different options with both the Lights and Hollow Lights coming in at the lightest end of the spectrum.

Likewise, Lurpiv are another strong contender with their Solid Trucks weighing less than the Thunder Standards at 367 grams and their Hollow Trucks coming in at the second lightest at only 346 grams. Alternatively, if you'e after something more affordable then both Krux Trucks and Royal Trucks are solid options, coming in at 355 grams and 351 grams respectively, and costing less than £60 for a pair.

Unlike many of the other brands both ACE Trucks models come in at a pretty similar weight that's at the higher end of the spectrum alongside Independent. Instead of offering a lighter weight, the ACE AF1 Trucks use a different manufacturing process for a 70% increase in the structural integrity of the aluminium, making these the perfect choice for anyone looking for maximum durability rather than the lightest weight - although they do offer a hollow version too for the best of both. They're also slightly different sizes but you can check out our in-depth skateboard truck size guide for more about that.

Does Skateboard Truck Weight Matter?
So, what does it all actually mean? And does it even matter? Well, the answer is yes and no: the weight of your trucks does make a difference, however it still comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. Lighter skateboard trucks are popular for a reason: they can help you pop higher, they can make your deck easier to flip, they can be easier to manoeuvre and they'll make your set-up less heavy to carry around, which is always a bonus.

As a result, lightweight skateboard trucks are often favoured by more technical street skaters as they can make your life much easier if your main priority is doing flip tricks. Likewise, we always recommend lighter trucks for younger, shorter or lighter skaters in general, as the less you weigh yourself the more impact the weight of your trucks will have - you don't want to be skating a set-up that weighs more than you.
In contrast, heavier skateboard trucks are often favoured by more transition-focussed skaters with the heavier weight offering a more stable base (which is especially important if you weigh more yourself), increased durability for grinds due to their more robust construction and a generally more solid feeling to ride - all of which comes in handy if you're carving pools rather than hopping benches.

Despite this, weight isn't the only thing you should care about when it comes to your trucks, as how they feel to skate should also come into consideration - although this isn't quite so easy to measure. Due to their different shapes and constructions, almost all brands of trucks will feel different to skate and which one feels best is entirely up to you, with different people claiming that Independent Trucks grind the best while Ace Trucks turn the best (or vice versa).
Ultimately, until some boffins crunch the numbers and quantitively say whether light trucks or heavy trucks are better, finding the right skateboard trucks for you is going to be a trial and error process.
