The Rundown - Open That Door Premiere
Saturday night saw some of the biggest legends from across the UK descending upon Spit and Sawdust to celebrate the launch of Dykie's new book, 'Open That Door'.
Coinciding with Spit and Sawdust's 8th birthday, Saturday night saw the highly-anticipated release of Dykie's new book and short film, titled 'Open That Door'. The event drew skaters from far and wide, including all the way from Liverpool, North Wales, and beyond with countless legends from throughout the UK scene. With the festivities well underway, everyone got busy laying down serious hammers on the vert while the rest of us sat down taking in the #vibes. It was pretty crazy seeing how many people made it down for the event and it goes to show just how beloved Dykie and the whole Spit and Sawdust team are within the community. Happy birthday Spit! Here's to many more years.
Before we finally got to watch the 'Open That Door' video, Christian treated us all to a glimpse into his deepest, darkest fantasies with his new video, 'Skateboarder's Security's Companion'. The video starred Peej making his dancing debut in a bizarre combination of skateboarding, skits, and boogieing which resulted in some extremely confused-looking security guards. Not entirely sure how he comes up with this stuff but it was an absolute pleasure to watch. On a slightly related note: anyone know how much it costs to hire a PJ impersonator? Asking for a mate. Nothing sexual, I promise.
With spirits still high from Christian's video, Dykie gave the people what we'd all been waiting for and treated us to an intimate reading from his book. It can't have been easing standing up in front of everyone and talking about something so personal, so big respect to Dykie for that. With the reading done, it was time for the main event and everyone sat eagerly to watch the 'Open That Door' video. In the video, Dykie takes us through the steps he took to improve his mental health, including taking on challenges like his run round Wales (with some lovely selfies from throughout his journey) as well as his return to skateboard filming, culminating in a bangin' edit filled with some of the UK's biggest legends. It's clear how much time and love went into making the video and it proper makes you proud to be part of this amazing community, massive respect to everyone involved.
If you didn't manage to grab a copy of the 'Open That Door' book on the night, it's now available for purchase online via bigcartel. Make sure you grab a copy to read Dykie's inspiring story, and all the proceeds are going to some amazing charities too which is an added bonus. We've also got some copies in-store too if you're old-fashioned like that, it's cash only though I'm afraid as all the money is still going to charity. Of course, the premiere also saw the unveiling of the limited edition Crayon x Spit and Sawdust skateboard decks, featuring artwork by Welsh legends, Nat Jones and Pete Fowler, which you can get your hands on from Spit and Sawdust.
We were also treated to a bangin' little bonus edit filmed the night before with all the gang giving Spit a proper pasting in anticipation of the event. The good homie Nick Richards was hard at work while everyone was boozing, capturing festivities and bangers alike which he promptly stitched together into a slammin' 4-minute edit. The clip featured more legends than you can shake a stick at with Dave Mackey, Pritch, Korahn Gayle, PJ, Leo Comanescu, Sam Pulley, Lloyd Houston, and many, many more laying down some serious hammers.
Last but not least, we wanna say a massive thank you to everyone who came down to show support for Dykie and all the hard work he's put in. Proper heartwarming seeing so many skaters coming together for a good cause. Brought a tear to our collective eye. But let's not forget all the legends from Spit putting in the work in the kitchen and behind the bar to make sure everyone had a pint in hand and a burger in their belly. It looked like hell on earth having to put up with that many pissed-up skaters so respect for not kicking us all out sooner. Go on Chris, give 'em a raise.
That's enough chit-chat though. Head to the shop to browse the latest skateboard decks, clothing, shoes, and more and buy now from CSC. Or, check out more of the latest skateboard news, videos, and product reviews on the CSC Blog. Safe.
