Despite everyone always harping on about the 'death of print' and the declining popularity of traditional media, it actually seems like it's now better than ever to be an enjoyer of skateboard magazines. While we have tragically lost some of the most legendary skate magazines like Transworld and Sidewalk, the death of these major institutions has made way for the rise of top-quality, free skate magazines like Vague, Free and The Skateboarder's Companion as well as more bespoke magazines like Closer Skate Mag and, now, 2001 Magazine, aimed at the nerdier side of skateboarding.
While Closer is very much on the wordy side of things, 2001 Magazine occupies a slightly different niche and instead focuses on the photos with the founder, Sam Muller, channeling his love for photography into the magazine's 170 glossy, full-colour pages. To properly flaunt the sheer quality of photography in the mag, 2001 Magazine comes in a hefty format with its 36cm x 28cm pages making this the biggest skate mag money can buy. Despite what your girlfriend might say, we all know bigger is better.
Coming in hot with yet another cover to add to his collection, our top pick for Thrasher's Skater of the Year, Tom Knox has landed himself on the of 2001 Magazine Issue 5 with a somewhat unusual photo. 2001 have opted to ditch the traditional skate photo cover in place of a majestic lifestyle shot with a really interesting tear effect revealing some flowers. This cover is the perfect example of how 2001 Skate Magazine does things different, placing emphasis on the photography itself rather than just the skating.
That's not to say it's all about the images though as 2001 Magazine's Fall/Winter issue also features several bangin' interviews and features including an in-depth interview with Tom Knox to go along with the cover; a catch-up chat with off-the-grid legend, Wes Kremer; a piece about how you can support the non-profit organisation, Salad Days of Skateboarding and more! Obviously these articles also feature incredible skate photos to compliment them as well as a load of striking photos throughout featuring the likes of Una Farrar, Nick Michel, Oski Rozenberg, Jordan Trahan and even Tony Hawk, so there's still plenty to enjoy even if you're not a photography nerd.
That's enough chit-chat though. Head to the shop to browse the full range of 2001 skateboard magazines and buy now from CSC. Or, find out more about the latest skate product on the CSC Blog. Safe.
