Matthew 'Dykie' Ryan Brain Drain Show Interview

Dan Bunn

Treat yourself to a hefty dose of Welsh skate history as the one and only Dykie gets given the Brain Drain treatment, covering everything from the early Cardiff scene, the history of Crayon, his love of running and his various misadventures along the way.

We don't usually bother shouting out podcasts (partly because The Bunt is the only one you should really care about anyway) but when someone treats us to over two hours of premium Dykie lore from the man himself we've got to give it a mention. This week, legendary Welsh fimer Matthew 'Dykie' Ryan sat down with the lads from Rollersnakes' 'Brain Drain Show' podcast, giving us a first-hand account of some of the finest eras of Welsh skate history, his illustrious filming career and his various adventures outside of skateboarding. We might be a bit biased but this one's a must-watch.

Covering everything from the early Welsh skate scene during the Pritchard and Dainton days and his various skate videos to his time filming for East Skateboards and later founding Crayon, Dykie's been around for some of the most significant time periods in Welsh skateboarding and he serves up some top-quality lore from over the years. But as you probably know, Dykie doesn't just limit himself to skateboarding and the interview also touches upon his other herculean endeavours, including his recent marathon up and down the iconic Gavin and Stacey hill in Barry and his run round the entire Welsh coast from his book, 'Open That Door'.

If you've read his book you'll already know that Dykie has more than his fair share of hilarious stories and anecdotes from his misadventures over the years and he goes over some of his greatest hits in the pod, including losing a young Taylor Oakley in Paris, missing out on a Crayon trip after Korahn spilled coke on his passport, losing all of his possessions at the very start of his attempt to cycle across America and countless others from his time living with Pritch. He might have pretty terrible luck, but at least he's got some good stories out of it.

That's enough chit-chat though. Head to the shop to buy the latest clothing and skateboard decks from CSC. Or, check out more Welsh Skate History on the CSC Blog to watch some of Dykie's old videos. Safe.
