How To Win Skate Competitions (and Life)
Want to win skateboard competitions? What are we saying, of course you do! Luckily for you, we've got four simple tips to help you win skateboard competitions and gain spiritual enlightenment.
With our 13th annual Plaza Comp coming up this Saturday, we thought we'd offer some helpful advice to any aspiring athletes on the easiest ways to win skateboarding competitions; because everyone knows it's all about winning. From what to wear on the day to tips for managing your mindset, we've got four simple tips to help you win at skateboard competitions, and at life. But don't worry if you're not bothered about winning, just focus on having fun instead. Competitions are dumb anyway.
Dress Well
Everyone knows skating isn't really about skating: it's about fashion. And nowhere is this more true than in skate competitions, which are basically just the cat-walk of the skateboarding world. This is the time when all the best skaters get to show off their most unique and exciting outfits to millions of cheering fans across the world, so of course you've got to make your outfit count.
There's a reason Ginwoo and Nyjah dominate competitions, and it's not because they're good at skating. It's because they're always dressed to the nines (why do you think they call it the Nine Club?) in the most stylish fits this side of Milan Fashion Week. So get yourself down Sports Direct, grab yourself some performance leggings (the clue is in the name) to go under your short-shorts and chuck on a stylish long-line T-shirt; it's time to go win some competitions.
Get an Energy Drink Sponsor
Why do you think everyone in Street League is wearing a Monster or Red Bull hat? It's because energy drinks make you good at skating. Even the hats are enough to give you a little power boost if you don't fancy ingesting several litres of bull semen. So, obviously, if you get an energy drink sponsor, which gives you an unlimited supply of energy drinks, you'll easily be able to dominate your rivals at any competition you turn up to. It's just common sense.
Take It SeriousIy
Having the right mindset is crucial when it comes to doing well in competitions so you always have to make sure your head is 100% in the game on the day, otherwise you just won't be able to perform. Take Dylan Rieder for example, he failed miserably when he entered Street League and that's because you don't get points for being cool, edgy or handsome; you get points for winning. A real athlete knows that competitions are the most important thing in life and it is the end of the world if you don't win. Remember: if you ain't first, you're last.
Be The Best
Last but not least, if you really want to win competitions then you're just going to have to be the best. It's a well known fact that only people who are widely recognised as being the absolute best skateboarders of all time have ever won competitions. Gustavo Ribeiro, Kelvin Hoefler, Jagger Eaton. These are people who have had a lasting impact on skateboarding as a whole and will be remembered as the best of all time by generations to come. Not dusty old losers like Mark Gonzales or Gino Iannucci; when did they ever win Street League? At the end of the day, competitions aren't about who landed a new trick or had the most fun; they're about being the best, and the moment you forget that you've already lost. So if you really want to win then you just have to be the best. It's as easy as that.*
