Hockey Skateboards is one of the most popular skate brands in the industry right now, specialising in premium quality skateboard decks, T-shirts, hoodies, caps, beanies, and socks, with an emphasis on progressive design and a keen eye for the finer details. Manufactured by BBS and PS Stix, Hockey skateboard decks are known for their creative flourishes, including embossed and textured graphics, as well as their iconic square shape which helps provide some serious flick.
Born from the minds of legendary Alien Workshop alumni, Jason Dill and Anthony Van Engelen (otherwise known as AVE), Hockey Skateboards was founded in 2015 and soon established themselves as one of the rawest skate brands in the game. Their signature tagline, 'Eyes Without a Face', pays homage to the classic French horror film of the same name, Les Yeux Sans Visage, encapsulating the brand's fascination with cult horror films which largely informs their aesthetic. Their initial run of decks featured this tagline alongside a picture of retired Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper, Bernie Parent, whose iconic hockey mask instantly evokes images of legendary horror icon, Friday The 13th's Jason Voorhees.
Known for their visceral video offerings and enigmatic team of skaters, Hockey are easily one of the most iconic brands in skateboarding. Their signature style of skate video utilises jarring music and visuals to create a sense of unease which truly captivates you and perfectly reflects the rugged nature of the skating. I still vividly remember my first time hearing the eerie and foreboding soundtrack of their second offering, Hockey II, which paired beautifully with the stoic skating of Ben Kadow and Andrew Allen. Serious goosebumps.
Hockey is the sister company to the equally edgy, Fucking Awesome, with the brands sharing a similarly iconic art style and a certain je ne sais quoi. While FA arguably caters more towards fans of Supreme - with the brand boasting an impressive roster of Supreme skaters, including Aidan Mackey, Sage Elsesser, and Kevin Bradley - Hockey can be said to be tailored towards a more niche crowd. With the uncomfortable nature of their videos and constant allusions to classic cinema, Hockey make no attempts to cater for the masses, yet still they've become one of the most popular brands in contemporary skateboarding due to their high-quality product and inimitable art direction.
Hockey backs up their iconic style with an equally iconic team, including certified legends like Andrew Allen, Kevin Rodrigues, and John Fitzgerald, alongside newer faces like Diego Todd, recent pro Caleb Barnett, and of course everyone's favourite, Nik Stain. Be sure to check out all their video offerings, particularly Hockey II and Hockey III, to find out why Hockey is one of the sickest brands in the game right now. You won't regret it.
