It’s great to see the Cardiff Bay skatepark busy and everything…

Posted in General skateboarding with tags , , , , , , on October 4, 2011 by Jim O

…but when there is a crowd of experienced BMXers, skateboarders and rollerbladers all fighting for space, it blows my mind that parents think it’s a good time to let their toddler push his scooter into the fray.

The countdown to a serious accident is underway…and at the present time there’s nothing being done to stop it from happening.

Dear scooter-dad – no matter how much you puff your chest out and stand glaring from the sidelines at the ‘irresponsible’ skateboarders who scream in startled panic at your darling child as they wobble, helmetless and unawares into their path…your presence will do nothing to prevent injuries from happening. We know it looks like a great place to practice scootering, but if you’re just starting, you’re under 10, and you’ve never been to a busy skatepark before it is POSSIBLY THE WORST PLACE YOU CAN GO.

The tiny children on scooters aren’t calling the shots here, it’s the parents who bring them. Parenting is about making responsible decisions on behalf of your child.

Nothing has happened yet as far as I know…though I’ve had to catch a couple of kids before their heads connect with the concrete. What do you think? What should be done?

New skatepark at Cardiff Bay…BOOM…here it is…

Posted in General skateboarding with tags , , , on March 12, 2010 by Jim O

…we know you’ve all been waiting to see what it’s going to look like, well the moment is here. Gravity got the contract and Marc Churchill has pulled out all the stops to provide a park that absolutely maximises every inch of the space and every penny of the budget. Big thanks to Mike at Cardiff Council for negotiating everything so quickly and making this happen. Work starts next week with an estimated completion date inside a couple of months.

It’s got loads of unique features which coupled with the amazing location right on the water overlooking Cardiff Bay will make this a must skate park.

Anyway, enough words. Get a roll of kitchen towel at the ready to mop up your drool and check these pics of the final design. To view bigger pics, click them, then choose ‘All sizes’ in Flickr.

New Cardiff Skatepark CONFIRMED

Posted in General skateboarding with tags , on January 19, 2010 by Jim O

There’s £140,000 in the pot for the first round of development on the new Cardiff Skatepark. A selection of the UK’s finest skatepark builders will be invited to submit plans, and skaters are being actively involved in the process. Sharpy, Dykey, Nick Richards and Gambarini met with the council rep at the start of the week and word is everything’s on schedule and looking sweet. Current direction is something plaza-based which will make best use of the huge space available.

CSC will bring you the news as it happens, or you can follow Phil and Nick’s Facebook group to keep up to date.

TIME TO GET SERIOUS – Cardiff skatepark petition

Posted in General skateboarding with tags , , , on September 7, 2009 by Jim O

I’m a bit late on this, but you can check out the news report from the demonstration that happened at County Hall on the WalesOnline site.

Nick explained that Cardiff needs a decent skatepark, like the one in Stoke, or like any of the many parks in other parts of the country that put Cardiff to shame…how did Cardiff council react?

A spokesperson for Cardiff council said: “Cardiff council currently has 10 community skate parks, several mobile skate parks around the city plus numerous teenage facilities such as MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area), teen shelters, various free summer holiday activities and free swimming.

Teen shelters and free swimming. Wow. We’re through the looking glass people. We’re inside the mind of a Cardiff councillor. Little clue matey – skateboarding is NOT a water sport.
