…one where you can sit down and watch skate vids on a rainy day. One where you can see art and products from all the local companies and artists. One where you can buy CSC stickers and where they don’t mind if you eat a meatball marinara Subway before fingering all the white tees.
One that’s a bit like City Surf, but like a more modern, more ‘hip’ version of City Surf…
Phil Morgan’s snake charmer CSC tee isn’t the only thing he’s been working on. He’s also done this amazing Balaclava tee for Newport’s Freestyle skate store.
These shirts are strictly GANGSTERS ONLY but even YOU aren’t gangster enough to get a black one like Jereme Rogers. WHAT’S GOOD JEREME! CAN’T WAIT FOR YOUR HALLOWEEN VIDEO!
Designed by Cardiff artist Phil Morgan these tees look super fresh in person…massive print on Gildan Ultra tees. A chance to buy stuff from Phil before he blows up and becomes an international superstar of the art world like Godmachine who did the original CSC tees way back in 2007. Tees are available in white only through Phil’s new website…£20 gets one shipped to your door (if you can find Phil he’ll do you one cheaper in person!).
Bakery boys James Silver and Nile Bridgeman’s section is rad. Does anyone else like Bakery as much as I do? And I’m not just talking about Gregg’s donuts and sausage rolls…I’m talking about Bakery the Cardiff skate company.
Tom Williams, Sean Barnes, Luca Zavaglia, Hywel Burke, Conor Charleson, Jon Faulkner, Ethan Watkins, Nick Jones, Tom Kirkby *cough* Bakery *cough*…everyone else were amazing too.
The other thing worth mentioning is that this video has one of the best slam sections I’ve ever seen. Classics were Conor’s horrible bottom step clipper and James Silver’s metal bar slam. Lovely stuff.
Apart from Bakery there was other cool stuff about the premiere. Like a woman falling on her face outside the pub. Like Scooch showing me his paintball bruises and being proud of his extra-curricular whipped cream based birthday shenanigans. Like Conor finally proving to the world that persistence and dedication will pay off eventually…and like seeing a whole new wave of Cardiff skateboarders ready to carry the torch.
Oh and did I mention that Bakery sent CSC HQ a t-shirt and some stickers last week? Bribery works ladies and gentlemen.
Super important do not miss:
BIG PUSH PREMIERE TOMORROW NIGHT IN BUFFALO AT 8PM. This means all the STEVE KING footage amongst stuff from local heroes Caradog, Jake, Chris Jones, Taylor Oakley, Pulley, Dylan and Nicky Howells.
…it’s the re-premiere of ‘Realise’ TONIGHT – 7.30 onwards, Buffalo.
Should be good this time as Conor has four back-up DVDs, a copy on a laptop, and in case of emergency a selection of skateboarding poems and stories relating to his time growing up as a young buck on the streets of Penarth.
If you can’t wait until tonight for your fix of Cardiff based skateboarding check this edit from Josh Ellis and friends filmed over the course of the Summer.
That’s it for now, there’s nothing else to tell you about the world of skateboarding this week so I’ll sign off. No…wait…what’s this? My Chimpo McDoodle senses are tingling…this can mean only one thing…Welshcakes news! Let me check Facebook in case I’ve missed an update…
How could I forget. Chimpo Ring of Fire at Ferndale.
It’s a skatepark, not a scooter park…just ban scooters 42.41% (67 votes)
Yes – kids under 10 should be banned from the park and so should their parents 24.68% (39 votes)
Extend the current skatepark so there’s room for all the people who want to use it 17.09% (27 votes)
No – it’s a playground…it’s SUPPOSED to be for children it’s you lot who should be banned 0.63% (1 votes)
So clearly a lot of scooter hate here on this demographically cross-representational skateboarding forum which suggests that scooter users should indeed be consigned to the same social strata as radio 1 presenters, bankers and paedophiles.
15.19% (24 votes) of you offered your own suggestions with various degrees of success:
Immediate ban is too harsh. Educate the parents and ban kids who are dangerous
They shouldn’t be banned, but restrictions must be made, they are dangerous
BUILD A SEPERATE SCOOTER AREA AWAY FROM THE PARK.
Scooters are the worst invention since Nazis
Need to prove yourself worthy
Allow scooter only at certain times: before 6pm weekdays, before 3pm on weekends
scooters wear full pads and are made to a article on skatepark etika before they
Provide Skateboard lessons for the scooters, and hopefuly they will convert
if its a skatepark them there should be no roller bladers or bmxers only skaters
There is nothing you can do!
The Council should put lots of warning signs up about etiquette and danger
MAKE A CAGE AND LOCK ALL THE SCOOTERERS AWAY
no let em stay and il just skate in your front room then fuck your dog
Like the surfing bit in Dogtown, they should be our slaves until we say it’s ok
All Kids should wear helmets and be supervised very closely by their parents.
Bring in laws to stop idiots breeding. This solves more than one problem.
Make them learn skatepark etiquette!
kids under 10 should be banned and the park should be extended for all
Put up clear skatepark etiquette rules and ban them if they dont follow them
parents should take responsibility for their kids
A scooter ban after a designated, agreed time
Shout at the parents
have ‘skatepark etiquette’ meetings with the scooter kids, teach them 2 tke turns
just ride through them
I really like the cage idea but it looks like the end result of this whole thing will be…a sign.
So it now follows that you are asked to contribute your suggested wording for the sign. Comment below please.
…but when there is a crowd of experienced BMXers, skateboarders and rollerbladers all fighting for space, it blows my mind that parents think it’s a good time to let their toddler push his scooter into the fray.
The countdown to a serious accident is underway…and at the present time there’s nothing being done to stop it from happening.
Dear scooter-dad – no matter how much you puff your chest out and stand glaring from the sidelines at the ‘irresponsible’ skateboarders who scream in startled panic at your darling child as they wobble, helmetless and unawares into their path…your presence will do nothing to prevent injuries from happening. We know it looks like a great place to practice scootering, but if you’re just starting, you’re under 10, and you’ve never been to a busy skatepark before it is POSSIBLY THE WORST PLACE YOU CAN GO.
The tiny children on scooters aren’t calling the shots here, it’s the parents who bring them. Parenting is about making responsible decisions on behalf of your child.
Nothing has happened yet as far as I know…though I’ve had to catch a couple of kids before their heads connect with the concrete. What do you think? What should be done?
So it’s that time of year again…the time when Cardiff is plunged into gridlock and chaos by the arrival of ten thousand students. For most of them, skateboarding will be forgotten until the student loan has been completely rinsed. In a state of parentally liberated delirium, the lure of cheap alcohol and the lustful urges of youth will compel them to habitually abuse their bodies in a carnal cycle of despair. Months later, alone, poor and dejected…they will turn their attentions to the discarded skateboard in the corner and, with a nostalgic yearning for the simpler days of their recently abandoned youth, they will roll themselves out of the stinking cess-pit they call home and into the big wide world.
So take note of this web-page dear student skateboarder, and return to it when you are ready. Here is your ultimate guide to skateboarding in Cardiff.
Where to shop?
This is easy. City Surf is the only skater owned and run skate shop in Cardiff. It’s in Castle Arcade off the top end of St Mary Street.
They stock a good range of stuff…and if you say you’re a student they might even give you a discount! They’re going to be moving to new premises soon and it looks like it’s going to be AMAZING…so head down to the store now so you can say you knew them when they were old school.
What to buy?
Local brands that are worth spending your hard-earned other people’s taxes on include:
Worth keeping an eye out for stuff from the little guys too. Bakery and us here at CSC put out occasional things…
If I missed your brand or company…SORRY! Post it in the comments below.
Where to drink
There are loads of options…Cardiff is pretty much the UK’s drunkenness capital. Buffalo Bar and Ten Feet Tall are skater friendly venues that are often the scene of video premieres and parties. You can get some great deals at both venues by signing up for an Eats, Beats and Treats card. Underneath Buffalo is Undertone, which is a rad basement club with great nights.
If you want to go mental and rave it up hard. The best option these days is probably Backroom, located in a bank vault in Cardiff Bay.
Regular pub fan? Can’t beat a bit of Dempsey’s for that old man vibe or The Pen and Wig for the only decent beer garden in town and cheap prices on food and booze.
Cardiff Arts Institute used to be pretty mental on the weekends and you could easily save yourself the entrance fee by jumping over the fence at the back…but apparently those days are over and it’s going to be shit from now on because the suits at Brains brewery HQ have taken it over and are gonna fuck it up.
Where to skate?
There’s one real big meeting spot these days, and that’s the Cardiff Bay skate plaza. It’s a really sick park even though at weekends it’s plagued by little fuckers on scooters. You have to get down there.
